On sunny, warm days in July hundreds of other people love it just as much as me and it can get quite crowded.....even to the point that they close the park. My advice to you, especially those without kids, is to arrive at 3-4PM. The park closes at sunset (around 8:15PM this time of year).

Jun 2021. This Sunday, we passed a line of cars waiting for entrance to Fort Popham State Park Beach at 9:30 AM, continuing for 1.5 miles to the end of the road. Here, we parked in one of the 25 spaces and entered this free historic site to spend ½ hour reading the descriptions of its 1861-1869 construction and its 40 big gun placements.
