Water-based poly that hasn't dried within 24 hours might indicate there's something wrong with the stain underneath, although if it's been humid it may be nothing. Oil-based poly that's still tacky after 24 hours is pretty normal; it can take a week for that stuff to fully cure. However, it's a lot more rugged once it does.

Try using a thinning agent like mineral spirits or paint thinner to remove some of the stickiness. This is a good thing to try especially when you’ve applied the polyurethane too thickly. To do this, dampen a rag with the thinner and gently wipe the surface. Wait a couple of days for it to dry.

Most stain brands require users to wait 12 to 24 hours before adding the polyurethane finish. However, to ensure the best results, you should let the interval last from 24 to 48 hours, especially when the environmental factors are not ideal. In short, you have to wait more than 24 hours before applying the first coat of polyurethane. Each finish coat should stay still for at least 6 hours before …

Paint the varnish onto the wooden surface, either with or against the grain of the wood. Apply a light coat of varnish, with each successive pass of the brush overlapping only slightly. Do not brush over the varnished areas again while the varnish is still wet. Let the surface dry for at least 24 hours.

60 hours. Well, after 60 hours minwax reccomended that I rub down the areas that were still tacky with a little mineral spirits. That removed almost all of the tackiness. Then I screened and then wiped the entire floor with mineral spirits. Let that dry and put down another coat of Polyurethane.

I thought that would be pretty simple (😳😩) and inexpensive so I agreed. So I scuffed up the cabinets and applied the poly in as thin a coat as I could. 13 hours later it's still tacky, and I'm afraid to sand or apply another coat, even though the can says you can apply more after 4-6 hours.

After the last coat, water-based polyurethane will dry in 24 hours and can be ready for light use in 3 days. On the other hand, oil-based polyurethane takes about 72 hours to dry and at least 7 days before light use. If it has gone beyond these curing time frames and the polyurethane still isn’t dry, then you have a problem.

The polyurethane will not dry! I did it in a cool (but not cold) dry basement, and after 24 hours time, it was still tacky, so I brought it into an AC'd room at about 70°F, but to no avail. It has now been about 4 days, and so I figured as a last ditch, I would try to goad it into curing using the oven, and even after 2 hours in at about 130°F it still is as tacky as it was 3 hours after application.
