I'm running osrm-prepare on planet-latest.osm with an Ubuntu 12.04 system that has i7 x 8 cores, 30GB of memory, and a 1TB drive. prepare quickly gobbles up most of the RAM and has 99-100% CPU usage for a few minutes. Then CPU drops to somewhere in the 0-5% range (often 0-1%) and stays there for several hours. I killed it after 9hrs.
