DV cam decks have wider heads than consumer DV type camcorders & you should expect at least 3000 hours before they need replacing. Worn heads will not be the cause of the poor picture on your Sony DSR-PD170, there are far more common causes of pixelation/sound drop out, usually due to shrinkage or wear in the plastic/nylon back/tensioning assembly.

I start watching for degradation on any video gear after 1000 drum hours. I don't know anyone who has replaced the drums one PD. Service for the PD150/170 can be handled through any Sony Broadcast service center. They are very serviceable. If you guessed that I like the unit, you are right. I just ordered five PD170's.

Drum hours: Drum hours refers to how many hours tape has run on the spinning head of the camera. Tape runs on the spinning head not only during recording but also during rewinding and cueing. The drum hours of a camcorder are slightly longer than hours recorded on it. A good analogy for drum hours is miles driven on a car.
