4 reviews of Patten Free Library "Books ships and history The first Bath library was started back in 1847 when John and George Patten got a bunch of books together and started storing them in any available space for public use. Finally in 1891, Galen Moses donated 10,000 dollars to construct a building to house the growing collections of books and a wonderful building was built.

The Patten brothers, George and John, were generous subscribers to the Patten Library Association, which was founded in 1847. The subscription library kept its collection in rented rooms and later a donated house until Galen C. Moses gave $10,000 for the construction of a new library building, with the stipulation that its use be free to all Bath citizens.

The new schedule will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Labor Day through Memorial Day. After Memorial Day, the library will resume its summer hours and close at 1 p.m.
