1/2-time = 20 hours per week “regular” hours + 10-15 additional unscheduled hours; Pastors often define their job, not in hours, but in number of days worked per week. Full-time pastors work 6 days a week, with one full day off during the week (usually Friday or Monday).

The nature of a pastor’s job is on-call 24/7. One respondent had an interesting take on a pastor’s workweek. He said that pastors should be expected to work 40 hours plus the amount of time a committed member gives to the church. He estimates a committed member will give at least 8 hours a week, so the typical workweek should be 48 hours (40+8).

How Many Hours Should Pastors Work? I’ve heard the advice many times: Pastors should work as many hours as the average person in the congregation, plus commute time, plus the number of hours that they serve or attend the church. This works out to 40-50 hours for the average workweek, plus another 5-10 hours for the commute, plus another 5 hours for time …

He said that pastors should be expected to work 40 hours plus the amount of time a committed member gives to the church. He estimates a committed member will give at least 8 hours a week, so the typical workweek should be 48 hours (40+8). That number is very close to the median workweek of all pastors. When factoring out those who are not full-time, the median number of hours full-time senior pastors work for their churches each week is 55 hours, with 42 percent working 60 or more hours. Among ministry activities, pastors spend the most time on sermon preparation –- five to 14 hours for half of the survey participants.

Surprisingly, the median workweek for pastors is the same in both surveys: 50 hours. That means the average workweek is greater than 50 hours for half of the pastors, and less than 50 hours for half of the pastors. Some pastors indicated their workweek hours but excluded sermon preparation time.

On the topic of how many hours a Pastor should work in a week though, I look at it through my lens as a public servant. The government pays me a salary and expects 40 hours of work from me. THAT should be the Median for Pastors. There are weeks when I certainly work longer hours because of the needs of specific projects, but as a rule 40 hours it is.

I think a pastor should work between 45-50 hours a week. If he can't get the job done, in this amount of time then he may need to delegate some things or keep focused on what he is primarily called to do: pray, preach, shepherd.

Prior to working twenty hours per week any denominational work would be considered volunteer time and not paid by the church. 10. The Pastor shall attend church social events as part of his/her work schedule. All expenses charged by the church for the event shall be waived for the Pastor and their spouse.
