Palisade Head is beautiful place to stop along Hwy. #61. I think lots of folks drive by Palisade Head without realizing what a interesting and scenic spot it is. There are few places on the North Shore where you can get such a great view of the lake. HOWEVER, PALISADES IS ALSO QUITE DANGEROUS- THERE AREA NO GUARDRAILS.

11 reviews of Palisade Head "Amazing views!!! While driving down highway 61 along the North Shore be sure to make a stop here. You have to drive up a winding single lane road to the very top of the hill where there is a small parking area for about 10 cars. Be careful on the road because traffic is going in both directions so you will want to go slow and take caution.

Just an hour north of Duluth, Palisade Head is a go-to spot for artists, rock climbers and sight-seers in Northern Minnesota. The massive rock formation rises 932 feet above the North Shore of Lake Superior. The view from the top is both spectacular and spine-tingling. The cliff edge, which runs southwest to northeast, is rugged.

Palisade Head is part of Tettegouche State Park along the North Shore of Lake Superior. It is easy to miss the entrance to this park, especially if you aren’t looking for it. However, this is a great way to spend a couple hours admiring the cliffs over Lake Superior, wandering around (as there are no defined trails), and maybe even spot a rock climber taking on a route.

Palisade Head. Drive right to the top of Palisade Head for easily-accessed, stunning views of the Lake Superior shoreline. This feature was formed 1.1 billion years ago from a violent volcanic eruption. While cooling, the lava rock shrank and cracked, creating the columnar joints that make this area so great for rock climbing.

Palisade Head is one of my most favorite places on the entire North Shore. My new favorite place at Tettagouche is Pedersen Beach, which is currently in the very beginning stages of development (but still accessible). Between Palisade Head and the Visitor Center, on the lake side of the road, is a little driveway with a chain going across.

The Palisade Valley Unit features broad scenic vistas coupled with an expanse of multi-use, four-season trails. Two more trout lakes complement the fishing opportunities within the rest of the park. The park is also known for rock climbing opportunities and quality birdwatching in the spring, summer, and especially the fall.
