Private Flying - What are P1/ P1 u/s /P2 hours? - Excuse my ignorance. I've noticed people talk about relative experience and express time is P1 or P1u/s or P2 hours. I've got hours on a PA28 and PA34 (twin) so am wondering what these hours are logged as on an application form. Thanks in advance.

Post PPL, any IMC training, bi-annuals I have logged as P1/s (though I dont believe there is any distinction between that and PUT - thought I stand to be corrected). For FAA BFR's I log it as P1. My logbook has 2 columns - one for P1, and one other hours flown. The two columns add up to my total hours of flight time.

A "checkout" that was conducted as anything other then an LPC/LST is either PU/T or P1, this must be decided before the flight dependant on the circumstances. If you have any GENUINE P1/S hours then these count as "in command" (because that is where they sit in the hours column) towards and rating/licence issue.

The main reason for it is to have the 150 hours or whatever it is of P1 time to "unfreeze" a "frozen ATPL" (CPL/IR with ATPL theoretical knowledge). After that it is meaningless and whilst people like to do it to fill up the PIC column in their log books it counts for no more than P2 - if you look at job adds for captains it almost always asks for PIC on type, not just P1 time.
