Do you usually meet the 80 hr/week limit for all residencies? Do you ever go over, like frequently in general surgery and ortho? Residents in most specialties seem to have 12 hour shifts each day. 6am-6pm or 6-pm-6am. These specialties have a lot of inpatient, though, so it makes sense to need residents at the hospital at all times.

As expected, the surgical sub-specialties work the longest hours with neurosurgery leading the pack and general surgery following closely in second. Of the medical specialties, suprisingly, neurology works the most hours, with pediatrics and internal medicine following close behind. And at the bottom of the list… you guessed it, Dermatology.

5:00am~5:30am - arrive at hospital, round on your patients, table round, update attendings etc. 7:00am~7:30am - start cases for day. Anywhere from 5:00pm to 2:00 am - finish cases for day. Then after cases are done you usually have to round on patients / ICU, put in orders, consult etc.
