    Most modern Smartphones have the option within their settings to receive delivery reports for text messages. These are usually confirmed on the senders phone with a small tick and indicate your friend has received the message you sent to them.     I seem to remember O2 doesn't support delivery reports even on phones that provide the option unless you use *0# - this might have changed, but that was certainly the case in 2005 - the built-in delivery report option on most phones did not work on O2

Start a new text message and before you begin type *0# followed by a space and begin your message, the other person does not see the code but you will get a message back saying when it has been delivered.

    As O2 don't provide delivery report functionality like other networks it's a required workaround unless your phone will do it for you. I had an HTC One which had a setting that forced a delivery report and my Sony Z5 will show a tick when the text is delivered but on others it doesn't work without the hack.

    I sent a text, got the progress yellow bar, then when the text was delivered a nice green tick to say that the recipent had received the text. Now I find myself on O2 with a nice shiney new Samsung S8+ Now when using ChompSMS with the delivery report setting ticked, I send a text and get the progress yellow bar, but no green tick.
