Most modern Smartphones have the option within their settings to receive delivery reports for text messages. These are usually confirmed on the senders phone with a small tick and indicate your friend has received the message you sent to them. There are a few reasons why I find delivery reports useful and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I seem to remember O2 doesn't support delivery reports even on phones that provide the option unless you use *0# - this might have changed, but that was certainly the case in 2005 - the built-in delivery report option on most phones did not work on O2

As O2 do not support SMS delivery reports by just activating the option in message settings here is what you do..... Start a new text message and before you begin type *0# followed by a space and begin your message, the other person does not see the code but you will get a message back saying when it has been delivered.

As O2 don't provide delivery report functionality like other networks it's a required workaround unless your phone will do it for you. I had an HTC One which had a setting that forced a delivery report and my Sony Z5 will show a tick when the text is delivered but on others it doesn't work without the hack.

I sent a text, got the progress yellow bar, then when the text was delivered a nice green tick to say that the recipent had received the text. Now I find myself on O2 with a nice shiney new Samsung S8+ Now when using ChompSMS with the delivery report setting ticked, I send a text and get the progress yellow bar, but no green tick.

O2-UK do support the use of Delivery Reports for text messaging. However, this is something that is supported directly on the network and not via the handset menus. As handsets are manufactured for worldwide use, some of the ‘behind the scenes coding’ on the handsets do not interact fully with the messaging technology on O2-UK.

o2 main system for texting was very different to the other networks and when requested the delivery reply caused o2 major problems with messages going wrong. So o2 switched the feature of from the handset feature.
