The abbey can be reached either from the Kaigasse by climbing the steps of the so-called Nonnbergstiege, or via a narrow lane from Nonntal. The church is open daily from 6:45 am in the morning until dusk (until 7 pm in summer). Visits are not permitted during worship services.

Nonnberg Abbey is where Maria, from the Sound of Music, was a postulant after World War I. It is a short walk up a hill from Kaigasse. It can also be reached on the path down from Hohensalzburg Fortress. The entrance still looks just like it did in the movie, although the cord and bell that they rang have disappeared.
