Newborns can only stay happily awake for forty-five minutes to an hour or two at the most. At about three months of age some babies still need a nap every hour or two, but some can be awake as long as three hours, if they are routinely sleeping well at night and getting good, long naps.

Baby girl is now 5 months old and sleeps 10-11 hours a night, plus 3 or 4 total hours of naps during the day, so there is hope! Things got better around two months or so, once her naps got more reliable and her sleep started to cycle more normally (in the first week, their days and nights can still be mixed up).

However baby sleep is generally broken up into 7-8 “naps” varying in length from 15 minutes to 4-6 hours. Most newborn babies (under 8 weeks) can’t stay awake very long (I sometimes refer to this as a baby’s “window of wakefulness.”)

By six months, those times are still slowly expanding so that a full cycle is about 4-5 hours and awake times are 2.5-3 hours in length. This trend continues until about 12 months old – when kids are ready to be awake for up to 5 hours at a go! Well, as long as they then get a …

“Generally, newborns sleep about 8 to 9 hours in the daytime and about 8 hours at night. Most babies do not begin sleeping through the night (6 to 8 hours) without waking until at least 3 months of age, or until they weigh 12 to 13 pounds.” Piece of cake, right? 8 hours at night, and a few 3 hour naps during the day!

Other times, he was awake but not crying, making me wonder how long a newborn should stay awake at a time. I simply assumed he’d fall asleep when he was tired. Only later did I find out that 3 hours was a long stretch for a little one to be awake.

Newborn awake for 3 hours. Everything I have been reading about baby sleep is that a newborn should be awake for around 45-1hr 30 max. My twins have really alert and long awake times. I try to put them down for a sleep but they just lie there awake. This evening one of them has been awake for 3 hours. He is now needing fed again and has not ...

With my oldest I didn't do this and I had to endure 4 - 5 hours of screaming and trying to climb out of the crib at 1 year old. With the twins the longest they cried was 45 minutes and within a few days they didn't cry at all. After 2 hours wake your baby up to nurse or bottle feed. This regular schedule makes your baby feel safe and cared for.

Baby awake for 7+ hours straight. I'm really worried about my 8 week old daughter. She is really fighting daytime naps to the point of being up now since 2:30pm. It's 9pm here. She has those crazy huge overstimulated eyes and nothing we do seems to calm her (trust me- we've tried it).
