Posted 2/9/09. Hi all. My newborn-5 days old is slept for 5 hours last night and I regularly have to wake her for a feed. My midwife told me to make sure she feeds every 4 hours as she has a tiny bit of jaundice, but i didn't set an alarm (I have a newborn baby-i thot she'd wake me!!)

Newborns 0 to 3 months: 14 to 17 hours of sleep within a 24-hour period, though up to 22 hours is in the realm of normal for preemies. Sleep typically happens in spurts during the day and at night, sometimes lasting only an hour or two at a time. Older babies 4 to 12 months: 12 to 16 hours of sleep within a 24-hour period is typical. At least two to three hours of those hours should be daytime naps.

Five straight hours of sleep is considered sleeping through the night for babies, and you may be experiencing this delight for the first time when your baby is around the four-month mark. Fourteen or fifteen hours a day is still the normal amount of hours to sleep for this age, but most of that will take place at night now.

By the age of three months, however, newborns can hold enough food to sleep for longer, perhaps 5-6 hours at a stretch. The key is to make sure everything’s just right at bedtime, and that your baby’s eaten until full and content. When your baby goes to bed for the night, you go to bed!

So then that means baby needs to eat every 1 hr 45 minutes which may make your days horrible if baby is a long nurser. We recommend for that reason to go 2-3 hours during the day and one 4-5 hour sleep at night. But if weight gain is fine, and weight gain stays fine with the extra sleep, and days aren't too hectic, sleep while you can!

Last night my 5 day old slept for 6 hours! While I'm happy I'm also skeptical that he's allowed to. The nurse at the hospital said wake him every 3 hours until my milk comes in and then he can go longer stretches. My milk came in on day 2 and he is eating at least every 2 hours during the day. 2 nights ago he slept 4 hours and last night 6.
