Newborns tend to sleep a lot. Some babies sleep for 16 to 18 hours each day, waking up only for short breaks to eat and have a diaper change.

Newborn sleeping 6 hours. Last night my 5 day old slept for 6 hours! While I'm happy I'm also skeptical that he's allowed to. The nurse at the hospital said wake him every 3 hours until my milk comes in and then he can go longer stretches.

The only worry I see is if you are breastfeeding that means you need to get in close to 10 feeds a day in 24-6=18 hours. So then that means baby needs to eat every 1 hr 45 minutes which may make your days horrible if baby is a long nurser. We recommend for that reason to go 2-3 hours during the day and one 4-5 hour sleep at night.

If the baby sleeps longer than 6-7 hours at night, mom’s prolactin level goes down. Prolactin is the hormone that urges that breasts to keep producing milk. If the baby goes a long period without nursing, such as 8-10 hours, not only might her milk supply go down, but her menses may come back, further lowering her milk supply, and increasing her chances of pregnancy.

Feb 25, 2021 at 12:05 PM. Hi Mommas! My baby is 4 weeks old in 3 days and has consistently been sleeping for 4.5-5 hour stretch one time at night (between 1 and 5/6:00 am) for the past three days. We have a SNOO so there are little moments of soothing that it takes over for us in those stretches when she wakes for a moment (not for diaper or feed).

Additionally, Is 6 hours and 30 minutes enough sleep? You might not need as much sleep as you think, but you might need better sleep. …They found that people who slept an average of 5 hours and 50 minutes to 6 hours and 30 minutes per night performed better on the test than people who slept more or less.
