Nara Koen (that’s the Japanese name for the park) itself is free to enter and open 24 hours a day, but you’re probably best off going during the daytime for a few reasons. Many of the temples and attractions are only open from 8am–5pm, and the streets aren’t especially well lit.

Nara Park. Where do I start! The park was established in 1880 and is one of Japan's oldest parks. The park houses several major attractions such as Todaiji Temple and Kasuga Taisha Shrine. Well over 1000 fallow deer also live here! In ancient times the deer was seen as saints and as helpers for the Gods and were well taken care of.

Yesterday morning, we took a train to Nara and arrived at Nara Park around 9 am. (Protip: take a taxi from Nara station and ask them to take you to Nara Park, not Tōdai-ji where most of the tour buses land). Nara Park is a public park but is most well known for the approximately 1,000 semi-domesticated deer that live in the area.
