10,510. 0. Jul 11, 2012. #1. I noticed that Plextor SSD drives have a MTBF of 1,500,000 hours. From what I know, MTBF is mean time between failures, I think. So it basically means the average amount of time that a drive will last before the hardware fails, right?

“This SSD has an MTBF of 1.5 million hours . ” It is an expression with a very high value (1.5 million hours is equivalent to more than 171 years) that is related to the reliability of a component, but the value is so high that it makes us doubt because, after all, nobody you imagine a component running for such a long time, right?

This doesn’t mean a 1.2 million hour MTBF drive will last 1.2 million hours, and a 1.5 million hours MTBF drive will last 1.5 million hours (that’s 136 to 171 years by the way). In the case of the Intel 335, the 1.2 million hour MTBF means that if the drive is used at an average of 8 hours a day, a sample size of 1,000 SSDs would be expected to have one failure every 150 …

As you can see, MTBF refers to the failure rate of a drive over its expected lifetime. This doesn't mean a 1.2 million hour MTBF drive will last 1.2 million hours, and a 1.5 million hour MTBF drive will last 1.5 million hours (that’s 136 to 171 years by the way) So What Does SSD MTBF Actually Mean for Me?

If they get one failure halfway through the test, they can say the MTBF is 1 million hours. But that’s not nearly the same thing as running a single drive continuously for 1 million hours (114 years), let along powering it up and running it for one hour then powering it down again 1 million times.

An MTBF of 1.4 million hours, determined in say, six weeks of testing, certainly doesn't mean we can expect an individual device to operate for 159 years before failing. MTBF is a statistical measure, and as such, it can't predict anything for a single unit.

For a 5-year life span 1M hours MTBF (114 years) mean the probability of an error for a single drive is about 4.3% (1-e^-(5/114)). That equals 0.86% Annual Failure Rate (AFR). Two drives running for 24 hours is 48 hours for MTBF purposes, so scale MTBF by the number of drives. 1,000 drives would expect to have one failure per 104 days. 10,000 drives would expect to have one failure about every week and a half. It’s not “half these drives will run 2.5 million hours.”. I agree, the “mean” is confusing until you know that.
