To clarify this just a little, the term ‘Work’ in Microsoft Project is referring to the number of hours a labor resource will work on an activity. In the work equation you can choose any term as the constant, change either of the two remaining variables as the independent variable, and calculate the third term as the dependent variable.

Assuming the task is Fixed Duration, Project will spread the entered work evenly across the duration. If your need is to see hours per resource per month, that can be shown without having the divide a long task into different months. The Resource Usage view can show total work per resource per day, week, month, year - whatever you need.

I would make sure the task is not effort driven. Using the task form, assign ME1 and enter 10 hours of work then assign ME3 and assign 2 hours of work. Assuming the standard 8 hours per day, Project will spread ME1 work out at one hour per day for the 10 days, Peak = 13% (rounded from 12.5) ME3 work will be spread at .2 hours per day - Peak = 3% .

Hi all. I'm learning the basics of MS Project (with Project 2013). I have a task that I estimate will require 5 hours of my time to complete, but an overall duration of 10 days. The exact distribution of those hours is unknown--it may be an hour every other day, or it may be 4 hours one day with the final hour occurring 9 days later.
