If, however, you decide to leave out the lunch hour and instead change the project's hours per day setting from 8 to 9, then Project will immediately reinterpret the stored duration (84*8=672 hours) as (672/9=74.666 days). Re-entering the duration as 84 days (84*9=756 hours) will then correct the task to end on 23 December.

As you can see, Total work is 56 hours (John 16 + Mary 40), and Duration is 10 days, because Mary will work only 4 hours per day (50%), and that means she will need 10 working days to accomplish this Task. With this approach you will get much more precise estimating! Regards!

assuming default settings, you should do two things: Add column Work to your view. Display Project Summary task: tab Format, enable check box "Project Summary Task". This will give you total of hours (Work) for your project in line 0.
