The Visitor Centre at Miraflores Locks is a great place to view the canal and also to learn about it's history. It costs $20 to enter which I consider to be a little expensive however you gain access to a number of different viewing platforms for the canal, the Panama Canal museum and also a short film depicting the history of the canal.

All in all, I would recommend between 1-2 hours maximum at the museum, just depending on the crowds and how much time you spend on each exhibit. I made it through in one hour and was comfortable that I had learned quite a bit and got my money’s worth.

Miraflores Locks. At 10km outside of Panama City, the Miraflores Locks are the closest to the city and the last step for ships crossing into the Pacific Ocean.At an $8 entry fee (per person), you gain access to a museum and grandstands on the first floor, restaurant on the second floor, and general overlook on the 4th floor (3rd was a private function room).

Ships pass through the Miraflores Locks for an hour daily between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. and 3 pm. and 4 pm. Traffic may only go one way at a time so you will see ships enter from the Pacific Ocean in the morning, and from Gatun Lake in the afternoon.

We visited Miraflores Locks visitor center which (even though we were going to transit the canal the next day) was a wonderful experience. It was really neat to watch the boats go through the locks and the museum was quite good. If you do this make sure that you check before you go in that there are ships going through the locks.
