The island is open to visitors from dawn to dusk. The perimeter path is maintained by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands. An outhouse is also available in the parking lot.

Description. Mackworth Island was purchased by James Baxter in 1885 and is where he built a twenty two room summer cottage. In 1946 Governor Percival Baxter who wished that the island be used for state public purposes and "as a sanctuary for wild beasts and birds" donated the island to the people of the State of Maine.
