In January 1994 then company Chairman Allen Baird announced that Mrs. Baird's had entered into a joint venture agreement with Grupo Industrial Bimbo (GIB), the largest bakery in Mexico with more than 11,000 delivery routes, over 350,000 accounts served on a daily basis, and 350 distribution centers, including plants in Guatemala, Chile, Venezuela, and El Salvador.

Bimbo Bakeries USA then entered the U.S. bread market in 1997 with the acquisition of Pacific Pride Bakeries of San Diego. The company grew again in 1998 with the purchase of Mrs Baird's Bakeries in Texas, which at the time was the largest family-owned bakery in the U.S. The combined operations were renamed Bimbo Bakeries USA (BBU).

Sandegard's, a large store with a delicatessen, proved to be a very good customer as it soon grew to 15 stores, all displaying Mrs Baird's Bread prominently in a glass case.
