Aug 01, 2018 · With mentum anterior, occuring in 60 % of face presentations, vaginal delivery is often possible. Normal labor forces result in neck flexion in the second stage of labor as the chin passes under the pubic symphysis allowing expulsion of the fetus. If the fetus is mentum posterior, flexion of the neck is anatomically impossible.

Face presentation at term.

Spontaneous vaginal delivery occurred with mentum anterior presentation 88% of the time, with mentum transverse presentation 45% of the time, and with mentum posterior presentation 25% of the time. Fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring was available for review in 29 of the 38 (76%) live births.Author: Thomas J. Benedetti, Richard I. Lowensohn, Al M. Truscott

The vast majority of fetuses at term are in cephalic presentation. Approximately 5 percent of these fetuses are in a cephalic malpresentation, such as occiput posterior or transverse, face (figure 1A-B), or brow (figure 2) [1]. Diagnosis and management of face and brow presentations will be reviewed here.

Face Presentation - D. El-Mowafi

Direct mento-posterior, unlike direct occipito-posterior, cannot be delivered because: Delivery should occur by extension while the head is already maximally extended. As the length of the sacrum is 10 cm and that of neck is only 5 cm, the shoulders enter the pelvis and become impacted while the head still in the pelvis, thus the labour is obstructed.

Most fetuses in face or mentum posterior position that do deliver vaginally do so after converting during the internal rotation into a mentum anterior or mentum transverse position. A fetus in a persistent mentum posterior position could be delivered vaginally if it …

Posterior Baby Position And What To Do About It

Posterior baby position is the fancy way of saying that your baby is face up, or sunny-side up. This means that your baby’s front is facing your front as well. You see, they want to see the faces of anyone staring down your nether region when they first emerge, instead of the other way around of taking a gander at your bottom.

Mentum transverse (MT): The baby’s chin is facing the side of the birth canal in this position. Trauma is very common during vaginal delivery of a baby in face presentation, so parents must be warned that their baby may be bruised and that a C-section is available to avoid this trauma.
