We stayed in Little Yosemite Campground for three nights. It was a little tricky at first to find a site with a bear box, but one couple was packing up and they said we could take over their site... The Merced River is a short walk for COLD water, and the campground had pit toilets! This was a plus for an almost 50 year old backpacker!

The first trail day began with hiking out of the valley from Happy Isles. We followed scores of day hikers up Vernal Falls. The crowds thinned out after we passed the popular waterfall and made our way to the Little Yosemite Valley campground. The hike up here was beautiful but strenuous. We gained about 2000 feet in 4.5 miles.
