May 28, 2012 · The main reason is that post 12 hour exposure your body will start to show more of the side effects associated with Lidocaine. The skin starts to breakdown and react when covered with a nerve desensitizing medication in a patch form, therefore they require a period of "calming and cell revitilization" which would be the 12 hours you go without the lidoderm patches.
