I left my car idling for 24 hours. Like title says, went out last night to get pizza, didn't use my car again until tonight, left it running the whole time. Luckily I had just filled the tank, so I still have half a tank. I feel like the biggest idiot on the planet right now. I just drove it a little and it runs fine.

I believe this is adequate evidence to say that, yes, you can keep a car running for 24 hours or longer without (noticable) damage. (There may be, of course, damage occurring during this time on a very small scale within the engine which could be classified as normal and wouldn't have any noticable effect.)

Two risks can happen: The car can get stolen. If the cooling system is not up to the task, the car can overheat -- especially if the fan doesn't work. Normally the fan is not needed due to air current as the car is moving, but when idling at standstill it's a different game.

RAY: Well, to answer your first question, leaving the car running all day won't do any damage. As long as the engine's cooling system is working normally, a modern car can run for days and days -- until it runs out of gas -- without causing itself any harm. TOM: Think about it, JR. If long-term idling caused engine damage, wouldn't you see thousands of broken-down police …

The fuel pump always sucks from the bottom of the tank so it really doesn’t matter if the fuel level gets low. Fill it up and a few hours of normal driving should take care of the problem. The computer may have to relearn how to operate the engine at other than idle. I would check the transmission fluid though.

He only did this during the winter (to keep it warm) but his defense was "it is good on gas". Quite a meat head though.

Something breaks. Keeping the car standstill with the engine on for a very long time can put stresses on some components and break the fan belt or thermostat. If your automobile is not well-maintained or all the systems are not properly functioning, then it could happen. The car runs out of gas.

The vehicles up there run 24/7 during the winter months. They change the oil based on hours ran, and not miles driven. My advice is get your oil changed and you’ll be fine.
