Lava River Cave, part of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, offers self-guided exploration of a mile-long lava tube. The Cave was one of the first lava tubes to be discovered in Oregon and is the longest one in the state. It takes approximately 1.5 hours to tour the entire cave (~2.2 miles roundtrip).

Total time with orientation is about 2 hours if you stop and read the information about the cave. It is cold inside the cave; I highly recommend wearing wool socks and gloves. I also suggest renting the high powered led flashlight one person person is sufficient.

Hours of Operation: Lava River Cave is open from May through September and is closed during the rest of the year (helping to protect the cave’s bat population). In May, Lava River Cave is open Thursday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. From Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend, the cave is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Lava River Cave is the longest known lava tube in Oregon. Located in Newberry National Volcanic Monument within Deschutes National Forest, it's about 10 miles south of Bend. There is a day-use fee of $5 per vehicle to visit that is payable at the small office.

Season: The cave is open from May to September and closed during the winter months. The busiest time is July and August. Getting there: From Bend, OR travel south on Highway 97 to Exit 151/Cottonwood Rd. Turn left after exiting and proceed through underpass following signs to Lava River Cave. Cave is about 1 mile down the road on your left.
