School was about to start. It got cancelled, emphatically. The tsunami slammed into and over Laupahoehoe Point, and receding, sucked the survivors out to sea. One of them, a 16-year-old boy, somehow managed to tie some boards together into a makeshift raft. He hauled two other boys onto the raft. They survived for 27 hours before they were rescued.
