Lascaux IV. Lascaux IV, place of memory and didactic place, plays an irreplaceable role of transmission of knowledge and our heritage. It is a space assimilated to a laboratory grotto, a place of experimentation and exchange, which prolongs, enriches and brings visitors as much to contemplation as to reflection.

And bring a jacket! Lascaux IV replicates the temperature (in the 60s) of the real Lascaux, nearby. I also suggest pairing this visit with another day of visiting the excellent National Museum of Prehistory in nearby Les Eyzies. If you have time, also schedule a visit inside one of the caves, itself. I particularly recommend Font de Gaume.

The cave is about 2 kilometers up the hill from Montignac. The tour guides are very good. You do not get to go into the original Lascaux caves. They were closed to tourists to preserve the very fragile 15,000 year old cave paintings from degradation. The original Lascaux is about 200 meters away and is restricted to archeological research.

In September 2018 I took a tour of the caves at Lascaux. I think the name is Get Your Guide, but I found it by Googling "Lascaux caves tours." It lasted nine hours with a pickup in Sarlat and included a tour of Rouffignac, the only cave open to the public which has the original ca. 14,000 year-old cave paintings; a visit to the National Prehistoric Museum, where our group of five were the only …
