Jun 29, 2008 · I, too, think it is interesting how different doctors handle anticoagulants differently. My hematologist told me I could stay on the Lovenox until 48 hours before delivery (since I am having a scheduled c-section at 37 weeks 3 days), but my OB wants me on heparin the week before and told me to discontinue 24 hours prior.

If not, my choices are to delivery vaginally the natural way, with no pain management, or if a c-section is required, I'll be put under full surgical anesthesia. If I would go into labor before my meds are switched & I'm still on Lovenox, then they have to deliver by whichever method is safer and will NOT involve a spinal puncture of any kind.

So they'll tell you to stop taking Lovenox 24 hours prior to c-section and if not, as there is a risk to hemorrage with an epidural, if you do need an emergency c-section or a c-section before the 24-hour timeframe of being off Lovenox, they advised me that I'd be put under general anesthesia.

So, really, the risk of staying on lovenox and not being induced is that you wouldn't be able to have an epidural and would need general anesthesia if you had to have an emergency c-section. But, if you are induced, you can just go off the lovenox in enough time.
