We currently have over 12,000 hours on old K582 and 9,000 hours on a Kohler Command 25hp. Both had oil leak issues, but a little maintenance and oil gasket replacement seals up the leaks and they run great. The K582 runs SAE 30 to make up for some wear, but it's reliable as a backup rig. My personal expectation of the engine for reasonable service (anything less and I'd be disappointed) is - cast iron Kohler singles 1,000 to 1,200 hours. Command twins and probably magnum/k series twins, 2,000 hrs to 2,500 hrs.

The engine seems to be in good condition, and has 247 hours on it (bought new in December 2000). The only real signs of wear and tear (other than paint scratches and such) were some scuffs on the the articulation (i.e. steering) hoses.
