We are starting with the 'Katy' apricot: it requires only 250 chill hours, is self fertile, and is grafted to Fl-friendly rootstocks like Citation and Nemaguard. Some sources say the chill hours required range between 200-300. Our 2019 crop is on Citation root stock and is growing very robustly, and this following a very mild winter.

One of the few apricots with a freestone pit, so it is fast and easy to process. Fruit is large and very flavorful. Good for fresh eating, drying or canning. A great apricot for mild winter areas. Self-fertile, so a second tree for cross pollination is not needed. Cold hardy to zone 7. (Requires 350 winter chill hours) One of the earliest to ripen, Late May to late June.

My neighbor's 7-8 yr old vigorous katy apricot puts out a ton of flowers everyWe live in San Luis Obispo and chill hours here are about 350. The Katy is supposed to require only 2-300 chill hours so i don't think that is the issue. This variety is supposed to be self fruitful. Would another tree for cross-polinization help the fruit set?

Blenheim will perform acceptably with 300 chill hours, though it's not the most optimal. The other low-chill apricot is 'Katy', though I think Gold Kist is better. EarliGold supposedly has a better taste than Katy or Gold Kist, but they recommend a pollinator for this variety for better fruit production.
