Howard's Knob County Park is a small park that overlooks the town of Boone and Appalachian State University. Stroll down short walking paths, dispersed picnic tables, and a picnic shelter. There are also portable restrooms at the park. The park is open May 1st - October 20th. Normal hours are 8:30am - 7:30pm daily.

Not far from town you can drive up to the overlook at Howard's Knob. Our directions told us to turn beside Earthfare onto Cherry St. and follow signs up to the overlook. We never saw any signs but we managed to find the park. You just keep going up and up until you find Howard's Knob Rd. The park closes at 7:30 pm. It is free to access.

Howard's Knob was named for an early settler to the area, Benjamin Howard, a British loyalist and contemporary of Daniel Boone. In 1979, the world's largest windmill was constructed there, but this experiment was short lived -- it seemed it was also the world's noisiest windmill. The turbine was dismantled in 1983 and the area turned into a park.

Howard Knob. Howard Knob, or Howard's Knob as the locals call it, is well known to the citizens of Boone and Watauga County. It is named after Benjamin Howard who was an early settler of the area. It rises 4,396 feet up and is a bit over 1,000 feet above Boone. You have a great view of the town, Appalachian State University and down the valley.

A master plan for the five-acre Howard Knob Park, owned by Watauga County, has been in development by Destination by Design, a firm hired by the TDA for $52,000 in November 2017. The master plan was first unveiled in August 2018. Phase one of the master plan calls for the development of the viewshed and active recreation areas.
