1) If there's no passivation product applied white rust will in general occur in less then 24 hours. 2) With a passivation it can go up to 72 hours with less then 5% white rust, depending on the type of passivation product and a lot of other variables in the total process.

This test uses the wet-dry salt spray test using a solution of ammonium sulfate and sodium chloride. The test consists of cycles of one hour of fog followed by one hour of dry. The fog is performed at room temperature and the dry is an elevated temperature, approximately 95F. The test should be run for at least 16 hours.

One component was hot-dip galvanized per ASTM A153 Class B and the other component was plated per ASTM B633. The samples were placed in the Salt Fog chamber suspended on non-metallic supports. The samples were left in the salt fog chamber for 1040 hours (43.3 days). The photos below show the results.

This finish provides 500 hours protection in salt spray testing per ASTM B117. Pre-Galvanized Zinc (Mill galvanized, hot dip mill galvanized or continuous hot dip galvanized) Pre-galvanized steel is produced by coating coils of sheet steel with zinc by continuously rolling the material through molten zinc at the mills. Different coatings have different behavior in salt spray test and consequently, test duration will differ from one type of coating to another. For example, a typical electroplated zinc and yellow passivated steel part lasts 96 hours in salt spray test without white rust. Electroplated zinc-nickel steel parts can last more than 720 hours in NSS test without red rust (or 48 hours in CASS test …

In ASTM B117 salt spray testing at 1,000 hours of exposure, fasteners with the Quik Guard coating have average red rust less than 2%. Double-Barrier Coating The Simpson Strong-Tie Double Barrier coating is a proprietary coating that provides a level of corrosion resistance that is equivalent to hot-dip galvanization (ASTM A153, Class D) in most non-marine environments.

It's my opinion that the salt spray test is inappropriate for hot dip galvanizing. My reasoning is that the protection galvanizing affords is as a result of the oxide layer on the surface of the zinc coating. If the zinc didn't oxidize, it would soon be all gone, as it's quite reactive.
