We were fortunate to visit this interesting home, the oldest house still in it's original site in British Columbia, since it is only open from noon until 2 each day. Only a block from the Capital and Downtown, it is amazing to find a modest old house still in place.

Helmcken House is crowded with both original items such as the doctor’s collection of antique medical instruments--the largest collection in North America--reproductions of the family photo album, and a considerable number of letters which visitors are welcome to handle. The room that stands out in my mind is Dr. Helmcken’s bedroom sanctuary.

The house was placed right next door to Governor James Douglas when he married the Governor’s daughter. Unfortunately, Sir James Douglas’ house was demolished at some point in time.
