My husband and I are travelling through Heathrow next month, and unfortunately have to suffer through a 5 hour layover before our flight to Dublin. I would love to take a break and head into the city for a bit, but 5 hours isn't *quite* long enough for any sort of visit. However, I would like to get out of the airport for a little bit, if we can.

I only had two hours in London itself in order to get back to the airport, go through security and to the right terminal. 5 hours is barely enough time to do all that, especially if you don't know your way around. But if you try, it'll give you something to do. With a 5 hour lay-over, I'd say you would get one to two hours in London itself.

And you’ll want to be back at the airport at least 2 hours before your flight home. On a 5 to 8 hour layover in London, you can take a Thames River tour or walk along the shore to see the Tower of London. Don’t rely on Uber or taxis – because of traffic, driving can actually take longer than the train.

Whether you have 5 hours or 20 hours in England, your layover will all start the same way–the arrivals area of the airport. When you get off the plane, you need to clear immigration and there can be a considerable wait here. U.S. citizens do not need a visa to enter the UK, but residents of other countries may need a LHR transit visa.

I have an upcoming trip with a 5 hour layover at Heathrow. It seems like a lot of time while also being not quite enough time. Would it be feasible to leave the airport, spend maybe an hour at a local pub (preferably with a traditional English breakfast), and make it back to my gate in time? I land at Heathrow at about 8 AM local time on a Sunday.

While 5+ hours might seem a very long time, it is much more preferable since it allows you to take your time and not worry about having to run to your next flight. By the time you get through everything on the way to your conneciton, you won't have all that much time to wory about. There are OK food options in the airport.
