Re: Hanamaula: Japanese Tea House. We have been visitors to kauai for 12 years and lived here for 4, and have been to many, many of the restaruants here on island. The hanamalu tea house is one of the very few crossed off our list forever. We walked in, the place was nearly empty, maybe three tables were occupied by two people or maybe three.

Hanamaulu Cafe, Tea House, and Sushi Bar (808 245-2511) has great atmosphere with rock gardens, koi pond, and tea rooms. O.K. so it's not quite on the south shore (it's in Hanamaulu), but it needed to be included becuase the Japanese and Chinese food is consistently excellent and well presented. Call ahead for hours and reserve a tea room.
