Towering more than 60 feet, this historic lighthouse was established in 1784, destroyed in 1984 and rebuilt in 1986. Located on the Coskata Coatue Wildlife Refuge. You can get a tour of the lighthouse if you join one of the Trustees of Reservations guided natural history tours depending on the time of year and access to the lighthouse.

Great Point Lighthouse was first built as a wooden tower in the year 1768. However, the original lighthouse got destroyed in fire in 1816 and it was rebuilt as a stone tower with Fresnel lens and VRB-25 system later. While you can enjoy the picturesque views of the sea from the lighthouse, driving to the lighthouse itself is a scenic journey.

1 review of Great Point Lighthouse "So there is no restaurant or professional entertainment. But you can chat with a seal up close or just watch the heard as they watch you and bark. An awesome very remote place. Saw no other people or cars or anything all day. Saw about 200 seals and double that many birds. The lighthouse is beautiful and the area is just a great natural haven.

Great Point Light (also known as Nantucket Light) was built in 1785, to help mariners navigate the passage between Great Point on Nantucket Island and Monomoy Island at Cape Cod. The lighthouse sits several miles up a thin area of beach. When the lighthouse was first built, there was not a keeper’s house built with it for many years until 1825.

The biggest problem was that mariners had trouble distinguishing the lighthouse from two nearby lightships, the Cross Rip and the Handkerchief. In September 1866, the schooner Leesburg ran aground on Great Point Rip.
