To get to Kirwin you need to take some secondary roads and then dirt roads, up the mountain for 16 miles from downtown Meeteesee, Wy. The road will go through streams, and depending on the time of year, they will be high and fast.

The Meeteetse Museums offer a FREE guided tour of Kirwin, the isolated, abandoned mining town located high in the Absaroka Mountains. Gold was discovered there in 1885 and it quickly became well established with a population of approximately 200. In 1907 a savage snowstorm struck, creating an avalanche killing three of its townspeople.

It is a 65 mile drive from Cody to Kirwin that takes about 2 hours each way. The first 43 miles is paved highway, the next 10 miles is graded gravel county road, and the last 12 miles is rough, but not terrible Forest Service one-lane wide road that requires 4WD with good clearance.

Kirwin is rich in history. This is an incredible day-trip. Read up on it before you go. YouTube has some WYOPBS videos that you should see before going. This is a 4WD or UTV/ATV trip. It is not a difficult trip if you know anything about off road touring. One caution is the first hill after the USFS campground is a booger if it is wet.
