fsck_hfs, is the FileSystemChecK utility for HFS+ formatted volumes. Normally the HFS+ file system Journal is used to clean up any file system metadata inconsistancies after a crash, forced power failure (or forced power off), disk drive cable yanked out, etc... However, if the Journal recovery is not satisfactory (or the journal has been disabled), then Mac OS X will run fsck_hfs against the file …

/sbin/fsck_hfs -fy /dev/disk2 You need to replace "hfs" with the true file system of your external hard drive as well as replace the drive identifier with the one you just located in setp 3. Step 6: When fsck is finished checking and repairing the errors in your external hard drive, type “reboot” into the command prompt and press Enter to ...

Hi everyone, I was wondering how long cron jobs tend to run. The reason I ask is that I've found my g4 powerbook to be working really hard (70-90% CPU) on a process called "fsck_hfs" for about the past 15 hours via the activity viewer. I'm guessing this is something the computer started...

fsck_hfs targets HFS file systems. Your main drive is formatted to APFS though. The output of sudo fsck_hfs -fy /dev/disk0s2 in your screenshot shows the first block of the/an APFS container. This is indicated by the NXSB magic string in the third line. The proper tool to check APFS containers or volumes is fsck_apfs!

The fsck_hfs command validates a Macintosh HFS-formatted disk partition and, if requested, repairs errors found on it. (Alternatively, you can run the diskutil command, or the graphical application Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.) In general, unmount a device before checking it, so no other programs are operating on it at the same time:

Type fsck_hfs -y /dev/disk4s1 and hit Return. The fsck_hfs verifies and repairs hfs containers and volumes. If the external storage drive is in the apfs format, use fsck_apfs instead of fsck_hfs. The parameter -y repairs any damage that is found. If you receive the message “File system was modified”, re-run the above fsck command.

Checking very large disk volumes with Disk Utility, especially Time Machine backup disks, can be painfully slow, taking many hours to complete, if it completes at all. This Terminal script vastly speeds up checking big volumes. The tool behind Disk Utility's volume checking is fsck_hfs, which can also be run from the command line. The key to fast volume checking is a sufficiently large cache for the volume structures …

This process took quite awhile for my 200GB image. Next, We need to run fsck_hfs on the sparsebundle. You will want to replace “disk1s2” with the disk number in the result of hdiutil. fsck_hfs -rf /dev/disk1s2. Now, fsck_hfs took FOREVER. Literally around 24 hours.
