The ride on the S-Bahn to the old city centre took only 15 minutes. As one leaves the station, the view of the sunken plaza is a representation of the city as a whole. Contemporary architecture stands side-by-side with medieval churches and houses. Many among the latter were rebuilt after the air raids of World War II. Katharinenkirche(St Catherine’s Church), which towers over the plaza, is notable for …

Re: 5 hour layover in Frankfurt. 4 years ago. Save. No, you should certainly NOT stay at the airport! It takes less than 20 minutes to reach Frankfurt city center by S-Bahn. Follow the signs for "Nahverkehr" or "Regional Trains" - there are no signs for "S-Bahn" in Frankfurt. The Jewish museum is near the main station, and it is rather interesting.

1534 posts. I had a 4.5 hour layover in Frankfurt (PDX to FRA flight). My experience was that passport control was overwhelmed by several flights arriving at once - I was personally glad that I had that cushion because passport check took nearly an hour. I have a 4.5-hour layover in FRA coming up on December 28 which is a Saturday and really want to do at least one activity in Frankfurt and worried I might not have enough time. We get there very early in the morning (0535) and our flight leaves 1000 which is usually when most things start opening on Saturdays.

5 hours is quite short to go out of the airport and explore the city. You won’t have time to see everything, but you will get a feel for the city’s atmosphere. If you don’t want to risk missing your next flight, you can always stay in the airport. Being a major international airport, you’ll have a fair amount of things to do.
