Fort Walsh is in Saskatchewan, an hour by road from Medicine Hat and 3.5 hours from Calgary, Saskatoon, Regina and Great Falls, Montana. The Fort is 55km south on Hwy 21 from the Trans-Canada Highway. Plan to spend at least a couple of hours at Fort Walsh.

Recognizing the importance of the site of Fort Walsh it was designated a National Historic Site in 1924 and then in the 1940's partially rebuilt to serve another purpose for the RCMP which I'll discuss later. The best way to visit Fort Walsh is on a guided tour which is free and lasts about an hour.
