Jun 2021. This Sunday, we passed a line of cars waiting for entrance to Fort Popham State Park Beach at 9:30 AM, continuing for 1.5 miles to the end of the road. Here, we parked in one of the 25 spaces and entered this free historic site to spend ½ hour reading the descriptions of its 1861-1869 construction and its 40 big gun placements.

Another riverside redoubt, Fort Popham, was built in 1862 on the banks of the Kennebec to stop Confederates from sailing by. The Confederates didn’t show up and the fort was never finished, though it and Fort Knox housed troops in later conflicts.
