The new ‘MD-10’, had to be recertified by the FAA and tested before it was allowed to enter active service. Since being asked by FedEx in 1996, it took Boeing till 2000 to deliver the converted aircraft to its client. The FedEx MD 10 conversion business case was based on the elimination of the F/E, maintenance savings, same pilots type rating as MD11, and a high number of flying hours in commercial service. IMHO, only maintenance saving cannot justify the huge costs involved. A limited upgrade (like on the Dutch KDC-10) will do the job perfectly.
