Oct 11, 2011. #2. um...there's not really any such thing as "typical" in an ER schedule (unless you happen to be a very high up administrator with few clinical shifts). The schedules are very variable, anywhere between 6-8/9/10-12 hours per shift, can be as nice as 6-8 shifts a month to 16 shifts a month with clumping (ie. like 10-12 shifts in 2 weeks).

It’s not uncommon for an ER doctor to deal with physician scheduling that has him working 6 hours one day, 8 the next, then a string of 10 to 12 hour days. He might be on for 6 to 8 shifts one month and the next be expected to work 16 shifts. At times he might have clumping of shifts, meaning he’ll be working 10 to 12 in a single two-week period.
