Just discovered in the manual how get the engine hours readout from my 2008 truck. It shows 4620 hours with 152,000 miles on the odometer. Is that high, low, average? That comes out to 32.9 miles per hour.

Similar levels of wear can be assumed in this example. Some newer vehicles have an engine hour meter. Here is a picture of the hour meter on one of our shop trucks.

In normal (if there is such a thing) driving, a typical engine will accumulate around 300 - 350 hours for every 10,000 miles. I ran hobbs hour meters on fleet cars for years and this is the average. Diesels tend to exceed this number a little, because most people leave them idle more.

My personal expectation of the engine for reasonable service (anything less and I'd be disappointed) is - cast iron Kohler singles 1,000 to 1,200 hours. Command twins and probably magnum/k series twins, 2,000 hrs to 2,500 hrs. #17 Posted February 6, 2014 my 312A with an M12 has 2,700 hours showing and doesn't use any oil.
