Mechanics typically charge between $50 and $100 per hour of labor to complete an engine swap, and this job can take up to 20 hours to complete. As a result, expect to spend between $500 and $1,500 in labor costs, in addition to anywhere from $500 for a short block engine to $9,000 for a complete, high-performance engine.

Re: labor hours for engine swap? I've done it in about 4 hours on an 88 manual. That was a long block sitting there ready to go, just swap manifolds and front engine accessories over.

Do you know what a long block consist of? 20 hours to pull an engine, change all the parts over on to a new long block and reinstall sounds pretty good. Its not an easy job. The labor rate sounds like it may be high though...depending on your area average labor rate is about 60-90 an hour with an average of what we see @ $85.00 x 20 Hours = $1700.00.

Have done search (thanks Bluebee!), but few finds that provide answers in terms of labor hours required. I am negotiating with my mechanic re: cost of either a m52, single vanos head cylinder repair job with thread repair if needed or a complete engine swap for my 1998 528i with 2/98 build date.

The labor is going to be between 10 to 15 hours. The difference in hours, is swapping parts from one engine to the other. The other difference is labor rates differ around the country.

The labor will be 10 hours at $75/hr for a shop to pull the old one and install the new one. So L*H=$750. The cost of a rebuild parts kit (RP) is say $900 bucks. The cost of labor is, idk say $75/hr again and they have the same 10 hours to pull it in and out, plus an additional 16 hours to rebuild it - giving us 26 total hours. L*H = $1,950.

1/2 day removal of rear cap hitch radiator etc.. and 1/2 reassemble (1 day total) then motor removal 1 day. 1 day to swap parts. 1 day to replace. 40 hours is probably more than is required as you would want a helper at certain points. Just looking at mine. That's where a potential MAJOR difference could be.

On average, swapping out an engine, again, depending on the prior factors, can take an average of 10 to 20 hours in labor alone. With some cars, it could take as little as five hours, while others could take more than 20 hours. A good mechanic can tell you what the average labor time is by referencing a database such as AllData.
