Working hours in ER should not be more than 8 hours in day time and not more than 12 hours in night duty. Always there are atleast 2 doctors in an ER in each duty. Most full-time ER doctors work in shifts from six to 12 hours long. But this depends upon the hospital or medical center how many patients arrive in a day.

The majority of departments have shifts that are 8-12 hours (8-10 being most common), and staff multiple physicians during each shift, tailoring up or down for the busiest/slowest times of the day. I personally see patients for 8 hours on average, but my shift isn’t necessarily done at 8 hours.

Just like most careers and jobs, emergency medicine medical practice typically consists of a standard routine. Most full-time ER doctors work in shifts ranging from 6 to 12 hours long. On average, a full-time ER job may include 10 twelve-hour shift per month. I have a friend working 8 twelve hour shifts a month and is still considered full-time!

Oct 8, 2002. #2. It really depends. A shift is 8, 10, or 12 hours in length most of the time, though that is variable as well. An EM physician may have 12-20 shifts/month. It sounds great on paper, believe me. But people who do it for that reason will not like it in the long run; it *IS* demanding in many other ways.
