At first glance, Professor Duffy's Marking the Hours looks to be yet another coffee-table presentation. In fact, although the pictures are certainly seductive, Duffy's aim is to try to interpret the use made of books of hours in England. As he says, ‘the history of prayer, like that of sex, is prone to elicit from historians a good deal of slack thought and overheated comment’.
