This paper presents a waste management analysis of the packaging systems for soft drinks in Mexico, with emphasis on polyethylene terephtalate (PET) containers. An optimal degree of PET waste collection was identified as a result of considering different collecting rates and distances, at a point where minimum environmental impact occurs.

Soft drinks have a relatively limited climate impact and eutrophication contribution as well as a lower energy use per kg than the other products studied. The environmental impact of the packaging is more significant, mainly due to the larger proportion of packaging material used per amount of product.
