The game does need to be reset surprisingly frequently. You'd play 24 hours straight, update a minute before you log out, then log out and update again. That'd be 24 hours of progress in 1 minute (to runetracker), and then you'd have the rest of the next 24 hours to add to that. Some people don't care of course, but those who do will mess up people who earned records with 6 hour logs.
